Presentation in Beetsterzwaag

Circus Europe was exhibited at kunstruimte Wagemans (artspace Wagemans) in Beetsterzwaag (The Netherlands) among other collages from Machteld van Buren and the colourful installation Friends forever from artist Wies Noest. The official opening was on Sunday 20 September 2015 at 4 p.m. The exhibition took place from 20 September till 11 Oktober 2015. A reaction (in Dutch) by Jurjen K. van der Hoek.

Presentation in Zagreb



bEUcitizen is a scientific research project about European citizenship. This research group organized the international and interdisciplinary conference Being a citizen in Europe in Zagreb (Croatia) from June 29 till July 2, 2015. During the congress days Circus Europe was presented at the Faculty of Political Science of the University of Zagreb. For more information see the website of bEUcitizen.

Group exhibition in Leiden


Ars is the exhibition space of Ars Aemula Naturae, a society of drawers en painters in the Dutch city of Leiden. This society is the continuation of  the painters academy, founded in 1694 by Willem van Mieris and Carel de Moor. In May 2014, from the 2th till the 18th, three artists have shown their work in which animals play an important role. Six collages from the Circus Europe project were there.

Europese Integratie Test

In the framework of the European Elections in May 2014 Utrecht platform House of Commons organized, in collaboration with the Flemish-Dutch Huis deBuren, a series of European conferences and debates. Philosophers and other thinkers offer a contemporary and personal perspective. The 5th meeting took place on Sunday, April 13, 2014 at the Geertekerk in Utrecht.

Speakers were Paul Scheffer, known publicist and professor of European Studies at the University of Tilburg, design collective Pink Pony Express and moderator Professor Sybe de Vries, Utrecht University. The first European Integration Test also took place. Who is the best European of Utrecht.

The exhibition Circus Europe, made by artist Machteld van Buren and poet Peter van Lier, was part of this event.

US Interest (Follow-up) 

On the site of The Project Room in Seattle poet Peter van Lier responds to the collages of Machteld van Buren in the final three parts of the ongoing art and writing collaboration Circus Europe.

Studio presentation 

In two weekends in March, 8/9 and 15/16, 2014 Machteld van Buren showed Circus Europe in her own studio in Marrum. 27 professional artists in the northern part of the Netherlands opened their doors during the 23e atelierroute Lauwersland 'Kunst aan Huis' (23th studio tour Lauwersland 'Art at Home') for at least 350 visitors.

Exhibition in Kristiansand

Arteriet in Kristiansand (Norway) showed Circus Europe in October and September of 2013. The opening took place on Friday the 20th of September.

Circus Europe was also involved in a museum tour to different high schools in the province Vest-Agder in October 2013. The children gave their interpretation of the images and discussed about the EU and the position of Norway in Europe.

A Norwegian edition of the book Circus Europe (Salmon Poetry, 2013)  is published by Arteriet. For this edition all the poems are translated into Norwegian. The new collage of Norway, made by Machteld van Buren, is accompanied by a new poem of the Norwegian poet Terje Dragseth.

In April 2013 Peter van Lier published two new poems (in Dutch) for the Circus Europe project on the Dutch literary magazine site Het Moment.

Second presentation in Amsterdam

On the Amsterdamse Boekennacht (Amsterdam Night of the Book),  Friday 22 March 2013, Circus Europe was presented in word and image in cafĂ©-restaurant Kapitein Zeppos. Peter van Lier spoke about the project. Machteld van Buren and Liza Berry read the poems from the book Circus Europe

US interest

The Project Room in Seattle published in January 2013 Peter van Lier's introductory text on Circus Europe on their website. The plan of this art institute is to follow the project as more writing and imagery develops throughout 2013 and 2014.

First presentation in Amsterdam

With seven collages on the podium Peter van Lier held a presentation on the cartographical aspects of the collages from Circus Europe in the poetry centre of Amsterdam: Perdu. The program on cartography was organised on Friday 14 December 2012 and was titled: 'You are here' -  map, subject and politics. Also with: Lowie Brink (specialist in maps) and Julio Pastor (artist).
